Pacific Sunset Block Tutorial

Hey there and welcome fellow Sewing Fools! I can’t wait to share my Pacific Sunset block with you created for the Paintbrush Studio 2016 New Block Blog Hop. We were given 6 colors of fabric from Paintbrush Studios in the following colors (L to R) Midnight, Daydream, Bordeaux, Peach, Coral and White.

Paintbrush Studios Fat Quarters

The collection of fabrics is Ocean Sunrise. Since I was born and raised in Southern California, I enjoyed countless and breathtaking sunsets over the Pacific Ocean and that was the inspiration for this block.

Sewing Instructions

We will start with our half square triangles. One of my favorite methods of creating them is to do 4 at a time. It is a super easy method that goes nice and quick. To start, using your 2.75” squares, make the following pairs.

  1. Daydream and Peach
  2. Peach and Coral
  3. Coral and Bordeaux
  4. Bordeaux and Midnight

Now stitch a 1/4” seam all the way around the pairs.

Then you’ll cut them up cross ways.

HST3

I love this method because you don’t have to draw lines and stitch on either side!

You will want to trim them down to be 1.5” squares unfinished.

HST4

and then if you like trim the tails as shown.

HST5

Press to the dark side.

Now we will stitch the 5 pieced columns together. Once they are stitched you will press to the white.

For the 1st and 5th column use a 2.5” white piece on the top and a 1.5” white piece on the bottom.

For the 2nd and 4th column use a 2.25” white piece on the top and bottom

For the center column use a 1.5” white piece on the top and 2.5” white piece on the bottom.

Piece the columns together. Use the 2” strips on the outside and 1.5” strips between the pieced columns.
